Research Assistant

Osman Onur Genc is a historian specializing in the socio-economic history of the Ottoman Arab provinces, with a particular focus on the economic and financial transformations in 18th-century Ottoman Egypt. His research explores how taxation and agricultural production shaped the socio-economic landscape, as well as the impact of agricultural commercial outputs on Ottoman Egypt and Eastern Mediterranean trade during this period. He works extensively with Ottoman mukataa, ijmal, muhallefat, iltizam, and cizye registers. He received his B.A. in History from Hacettepe University and continued his studies as an exchange student at the University of Hamburg in the Department of Turkology and Ottoman Studies. He completed his M.A. at Hacettepe University between 2018 and 2021 with a thesis entitled An Example of Local Treasury in 18th-Century Ottoman Egypt “Kushufiyyah (1711-1795). Currently, he is pursuing his Ph.D. at Hacettepe University and conducting research at Sorbonne University and the French National Archives for his dissertation, Agriculture, Taxation, and Trade Policies in 18th-Century Ottoman Egypt. As a research assistant in the project led by Prof. Dr. Ali Yaycıoglu and Asst. Prof. Dr. Fatma Oncel at the Center for Spatial and Textual Analysis (CESTA) at Stanford University, Osman Onur Genc focuses on data analysis, archival text examination, and the systematic integration of findings into databases. His research investigates the interconnections of debt, money, governance, and center-periphery relations in the Ottoman Empire from the late 18th to the early 19th century.
